Preview: Underyourseat 11th Anniversary w/ Traumer, Javier Carballo

By Event Previews and Reviews, Hot Off The Press, MEOKO Exclusive, MEOKO Presents, Reviews

javier preview banner

Hot on the heels of his appearance at Eagervision on May 11th, Javier Carballo flies back to the Canaries to celebrate the 11th anniversary of his and partner-in-crime Berna’s Underyourseat party. The party’s a staple of the island’s nightlife, and going stronger than ever with the recent launch of the in-house label to celebrate the 10-years mark. The first EP was provided by Javier himself with Lowwaxx, and encompassed the broad range of the party, with four enchanting groovers of dub and minimal allegiances.

https://soundcloud.com/user-446648048/sets/lowwaxx-6-terms-zucchini-ep” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener noreferrer

At such a good time for Underyourseat, no doubt Javier and Berna will be in the mood to celebrate. Both are proponents of a stream-lined and hypnotic sound, that carries the crowd seamlessly into the night up to those wee hours of the morning — sunglasses on, head-bobbing to the tunneling grooves til the sun is well up. There’s probably no better way to enjoy it than catching them in their home turf. After 11 years of inviting over the best names in minimal, from Onur Özer to Cabanne and Raresh, there’s a reason they’re now the ones headlining events across Europe.

For this special occasion, they’ve invited a good friend of ours, who we interviewed back in December: Traumer. Since he steered his alias into a more micro/minimal direction, here at MEOKO we can’t get enough of the Frenchman’s drum-heavy rollers. And in that regard, we’ve been treated: even more productive than usual, Romain is already four releases in since the beginning of the year, including one on his ever-special GETTRAUM label. A very special guest for a very special occasion.

So there you go: on May 12th, it’s in the Canaries that the good things are, so it seems. you can already book your tickets here. See you there at the front-left speakers — after-party on the beach.

Preview & Competition: Eagervision presents Cap, Javier Carballo & More

By Competitions, Event Previews and Reviews, Festival, Hot Off The Press, MEOKO Exclusive, MEOKO Presents

eagervision meoko banner

Are you going to Sunwaves? If not… my heart aches for you. If yes, then you know you’ll be tapping your arms for some more of that oh-so-sweet loopy minimal Romanian vibe in the weeks following the festival. Thank god if you live in London, Eagervision’s got your back and is ready to pull you out of the withdrawal-induced bleakness by throwing a party loaded with rolling beats and sunny vibes at Bloc. on May 11th.

Indeed, the headliners are two Sunwaves regulars, and both will be hot on the heels of this year’s 23rd edition. There’s little need to introduce Cap, one of the most revered names amongst the cohort of Romanian DJs that the country gave us in the past decade. But despite the fact his style displays all the hallmarks we love about the Romanian sound — trippy, hypnotic melodies, impeccable mixes, driving beats — Cap is one of the genre’s few DJs able to pepper his sets with tunes encompassing a much wider spectrum, from house to electro. This versatility was manifest in his MEOKO podcast:

Cap MC

Javier Carballo, on the other hand, rings perhaps less of a bell than his Romanian counterpart, yet there’s a reason he’s a regular at Sunwaves: as a DJ, his style perfectly encapsulates the festival’s ethos. Javier specializes in hypnotizing, sun-drenched beats, which is a combination we’re always thirsty for. He might fly a bit under the radar to some, but Eagervision knows better and we’re delighted they bring him back on British soil with this booking.

Completing the line-up are a few of Eagervision’s protégés, all of them having or about to drop EPs on the label. Alffie, Alwaan and Fernando Montes are sure to make you move.

The best of it all — as if a Romanian party in London was not enough — is that we’re holding a competition for this event, a competition that has not one but two winners. The first prize includes

– A 2-hour DJ lesson (whether you already pride yourself with your skills or are a complete newbie, know that the lesson can be for beginner or advanced),

– Javier Carballo’s recent double EP on Hector’s label Vatos Locos Silver Smile, so you’ll have something to spin for those lessons,

– And of course two entries and some Eagervision goodies, (which the other winner will also get, two entries and some Eagervision goodies.)

As usual, all you have to do to participate is email us at hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with the subject heading ’Eagervisions’. Good luck!

Join us on May 11 to fight the post-Sunwaves blues, and book your tickets already.

Preview: Love Family Park 2018

By Event Previews and Reviews, Festival, Hot Off The Press, MEOKO Exclusive, News

LFP 2018 banner23

Here’s one for our Germany-based readers. Love Family Park, the long-running yearly day-long event returns on July 28 in Rüsselsheim-am-Main, close to Frankfurt. This is the first time the summery celebration settles in this small town, but the settings amongst the green Main meadows promises to be breathtaking.

Elephant Studio-2811

Of course, if the meadows don’t do the trick, then have a look at the line-up: it’s only big-hitters — two or three of them would be your average festival’s headliners, but here there’s more than twenty of them, sharing the decks over the various stages for 12 hours, from 10 AM to 10 PM. Quite a few of them return to the festival, such as Solomun or Chris Liebing, but there’s some new faces too, with the rising techno star from Belgium Amelie Lens, or the more established Maceo Plex.

There’s quite a variety of flavours too, with the unpredictable minimalist maestro Ricardo, Detroit-via-Ibiza hero Richie Hawtin, or the ever-amazing Nina Kraviz — I’ll never tire to sing her praises, as no other DJ of her stature is such a risk-taker, juggling hard trance and experimentally-tinged cuts with the techno her crowds expect.

IMG 0920 Felix Hohagen

Last but not least, Sven Väth is announced for the main stage closing. The German veteran and Love Family Park regular will play in his home turf and is at its best in this kind of big celebrations. Whether it’s your first time or 20th seeing him, there’s no doubt you’ll understand the adoration his fans have for the Cocoon boss.

Elephant Studio-2600

Here’s the full line-up in alphabetical order: Adriatique, Amelie Lens, andhim, Boris Brejcha, Butch, Chris Liebing, Dixon, Dominik Eulberg live, Fritz Kalkbrenner live, Karotte, Lexy & K-Paul live, Loco Dice, Maceo Plex, Moonbootica, Nina Kraviz, Oliver Koletzki, Pan-Pot, Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler, Solomun, Sven Väth.

Preview & Competition: E1 Presents: Body & SOUL

By Competitions, Event Previews and Reviews, Hot Off The Press, MEOKO Exclusive, MEOKO Presents

bodysoulmeokobanner

The turn of the century is often remembered as a dark age for New York dance music. With then-mayor Rudy Giuliani cracking up on parties, using for instance the infamous and racist no-dancing law that only just got repealed, dance music lovers were forced more and more underground. Yet from 1996 to 2002, a cult Sunday afternoon party drew week-in week-out those that no amount of policing could prevent from dancing: starting off as a mere outlet for François K and his friends’ frustration with the state of New York’s nightlife, Body & Soul made a lasting impact on the city’s scene. And now E1 London is bringing the full crew to London for a rare Body & Soul appearance this Saturday.

Body & Soul got started in July 1996 as a weekly Sunday afternoon affair by three long-time alumni of the NYC dance scene, and soon acquired a cult status among its crowd of devotees — it is now remembered with the same fondness as the very parties and clubs that had inspired it in the first place. Indeed, François K, Joe Claussel and Danny Krivit — the three masterminds behind the party — all cut their teeth behind the decks of the Big Apple’s most iconic clubs, where they’ve put in a ludicrous amount of time as dancers themselves. The Loft, the Paradise Garage, you name it: here is the DNA running in Body & Soul’s blood. In other words, few people live and breathe dance music as much as those three. A list of their individual accomplishments would be unreasonably lengthy, but suffice to say that Joe Claussel is one of the founders of cult house label Ibadan, while François K is simply one of the most influential producers ever: from pretty much single-handedly pioneering the art of the dance music edit in the late ’70s to collaborating with Mick Jagger and Depeche Mode, the native Frenchman has forever imprinted his mark on the musical landscape.

And as for Danny Krivit, in addition to being one of his city’s most famous DJs, he’s given us what for my money might be the best edit ever: if you want one tune that embodies the ethos of Body & Soul, look no further than his version of “Love Is The Message”.

To celebrate this unique occasion to catch the legendary trio in London, MEOKO is putting on a special competition. In addition to two entries for Saturday’s party at E1, the lucky winner will get £30 worth of free drinks and a copy of the first 3×12” compilation put out by Body & Soul (https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/62214?ev=rb), which includes a bunch of the party’s most rinsed tunes, and bona fide New York garage classics.

All you have to do to participate is email us at hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with ‘Body&Soul’ as the subject heading. Good luck!.

To leave him the last word, here’s what François K had to say about Body & Soul at its height: “these parties we’re having right now are among the very few I go to where the crowd goes nuts… They’re screaming and hollering, singing and stomping, they don’t want to leave the club. Every week now, it’s become this habit, where we put the lights on and everybody keeps dancing. We turn the music off and they sing, so we have to put more music on.” So if you like your house music soulful, try your chance at the competition and come over at E1 this Saturday. This is one for the books.

Preview & Announcement: Moonland Festival

By Event Previews and Reviews, Festival, Hot Off The Press, Interview & Exclusive Mix, MEOKO Exclusive, News

Moonland Announcement Banner

Festivals usually evoke a sunny imaginary, a scantily-clad, sunglass-wearing crowd bouncing to cheerful music at the height of the summer, bringing home sunburns collected aboard boat parties along with the good memories. But today let’s put ourselves under the sign of the moon, as the promoters behind Moonland Festival, Estonia’s newest festival, invite us to do. Moonland takes place from the 3rd to the 5th of August in Rummu, a former limestone quarry nearby Tallinn, the country’s capital. Rummu, we’re told, “is filled with scars of its past”, calling to mind the moon’s surface with its oceans of “dead volcanoes, impact craters, and lava flows”. Indeed the photos are stunning, eerie even. It’s certainly a one-of-a-kind place that stimulates the imaginary — you get a sense that something special is going to happen here.

In the increasing market of European boutique festivals, Moonland sure manages to set itself apart with this breathtaking setting. That said, it’s not all about the spot, of course. The magic happens when a string of elements are assembled, music chief among them. But there’s no worry to be had on that regard either: our recent interview w/ Dorian Paic will be hot on the heels of yet another season in Ibiza and his label’s 20th birthday, so expect to find him at his usual best. Both Archie Hamilton and Enzo Siragusa from FUSE will come to represent London’s modern tech-house sound, while Barac and Cristi Cons are entrusted with bringing the vibes from Romania. A flurry of live appearances have also been announced, with Ion Ludwig or Philip Gorbachev, as well as a rare appearance from Mathew Jonson and his partner Isis Kuaygarond

Baarc MC

For something a bit warmer, Octo Octa will play live the sounds of her classic house-inflected debut album, Where Are We Going? (well, to Rummu, Estonia, duh). Finally it’s impossible not to mention a veteran of the Canadian scene, Mike Shannon. The guy’s know for a driving yet quirky sound — futuristic vibes that live up to electronic music’s ongoing love affair for all things spacey. Since the moon has always proven attractive for electronic music producers — whether you think about the early Detroiter’s outer-space fantasies, or to Jeff Mills’ recent score for pioneering French movie A Trip to the Moon — Mike Shannon will sure be inspired by Rummu’s unique landscape.

Here is the full line-up, with many more names yet to be announced:

Andrey Nechaev

And if you’ve spotted the yellow logo on the posters, well, MEOKO is over the moon to announce it’s the festival’s official media partner. You know the drill: more info and exclusive content to come on here. In the meantime, I’d check with my boss about having the 3rd to 5th of August off. See you on the moon.

We did warn you, the summer dates are coming thick and fast; and certainly packing a punch. Every June, OFF Week in Barcelona is a time for party promoters and label heads to display what they offer in off key and historical locations around the city.

This year two dates firmly allocated amongst this hectic week of music is the 13th and 14th of June, as Prague based Round Up agency and newly formed Romanian promotion team Drums join forces for two parties, taking over two separate locations for journeys in to the early hours. A combination of special guests and several artists from the Round Up agency roster.

On the Wednesday (13th June), the debut party of this original combination will take place at This Side UP, a new movement in the city created in recent times. SIT (Cristi Cons & Vlad Caia) bring their melodic hypnotic sound to the city, joined by what is set to be a spectacular journey in the form of Praslea b2b Cezar. Familiar face in Prague and Round Up representative Bruno Curtis will also play bringing fellow artists Agustin Alvarez, JADA, Dafoe and And.re along for the ride.

Preview & Announcement: Mdrnty Cruise 2018

By Event Previews and Reviews, Hot Off The Press, MEOKO Exclusive, News

MDRNTY announcement banner

We’re all down with the nitty-gritty side of dance music, aren’t we? I might just speak for myself, but dingy, spooky warehouses where you dance side by side with nightlife fairies and afterparties zombies is what I live for. Yet we all know this lifestyle can be draining too, and sometimes, just once in a while really, you need to take a break and recharge your batteries. Or… do you? Not if MDRNTY is there to pick you up. There’s the opportunity to keep on dancing while enjoying some of that well-deserved self-care.

MDRNTY is a 3-day long cruise aboard MSC Opera, setting sail from Genova in Italy, stopping in Sardinia and Corsica, and heading back to Genova. The self-described “ephemeral epicurean experience” includes unlimited food and drinks; pop-up events such as yoga sessions; film screenings; swimming pools; sports, and so on. Sounds nice for your parents, right? But hey, we’re not a tour operator website, so here’s the twist: during the entirety of the cruise, dance music luminaries will take turns behind the decks, from the moment the anchor raises til it finally drops. Non-stop. Yep, 24-hour music over three days and night. I might want to take back what I said about relaxing — but where else will you sweat it off to Ricardo’s trippy beats and then chill with him by the pool?

It’s not only Ricardo, as quite a few MEOKO darlings are part of the adventure. There’s the French trio Apollonia, whose bumpy beats seem to follow us everywhere — we simply cannot get enough of them. A long-time comrade of the trio who shares their pumping ethos will be there too in the person of Djebali. Andrey Pushkarev is no longer Moscow’s best-kept secret and will know how to cool down dancers under the blazing sun with the dubby sounds he likes to distill in his sets. Ion Ludwig will grace the attendees with one of his famed live appearances, just like veteran Mathew Jonson. There’s FUSE resident Archie Hamilton for the bumpier stuff, Berlin hero Dana Ruh for the deeper vibes, and Lazare Hoche repping Paris’ younger generation with a sleek combination of those two sounds.

mdrnty 2

All in all, there’s something for everyone but such a line-up wouldn’t be complete without a nice contingent from our beloved Romanian scene. So to round this up in the best way possible, MDRNTY invited aboard CAP, Herodot, Mihai Pol and Suciu. And who better than the mighty duo of Cristi Cons and Vlad Caia to soundtrack such a sun-drenched experience? If you’ve ever seen them at Sunwaves, you know that nothing beats their driving Romanian vibes in such a setting.

Sure enough, this cruise is not for the 20-something just getting into dance music. But if you’re a bit older and more affluent, this might be just the right thing for you. You’ve put in the hours on the dark dancefloors of the underground, after all — time to treat yourself. In any case, you’ll see us there, as MEOKO is happy to announce we’re MDRNTY’s official media partner. So watch out for upcoming info on here, and all aboard MSC Opera. See you in June!

Porto-Portugal-Old-City-472119842 6001x4001 preview

Picture this: a cool drink in hand, good vibes all around, and chilled electronic beats in a beautiful 12th century UNESCO Heritage Site along the Douro River. Are you sold yet? Well, you will be when you hear the full line-up for RPMM Festival in Porto.

The new festival will be hitting many different venues in the historic city centre with a series of day and night parties over the 28th and 29th July. The festival is not only full of big names, but also will show the brilliance of Porto’s local talent, party scene, and general relaxed atmosphere. It’s also not a bad excuse to over-indulge in some famous Port Wine….infact, it would be rude not too!

rpmmvenueee

Already announced are big names such as Âme, Guy Gerber and Francesca Lombardo, but this next announcement is a gamechanger. The HUGE names added today include scottish party starters Jackmaster and Jasper James, along with Matt Tolfrey, Margaret Dygas, Barac, D’Julz, Mella Dee, Patrice Scott, Jasper James, Matthias Tanzmann, Art Department, Death on the Balcony, Kenny Glasgow, Nitin, Robin Ordell, Geddes, Varhat, Alexis Raphael and many more.

Half Baked, Ibiza Voice, Keep On Dancing, MusiK@ll and You Are We are all hosting stages and after parties at various venues around Porto, which means – we are naturally delighted that we get to host a stage among such big names and friends within the industry! Yep, we have partnered up with RPMM Global and are hosting a stage at this groundbreaking festival, bringing some exciting sounds to Portugal.

After careful plaqnning, we very excited to announce the line up for MEOKO stage. We’re bringing Barac, Joseph Williams, Varhat, Cleymoore and Geddes to the table.

Headlining is one of our favourites –  Romanian Barac uses careful melodies sparingly. His sound has changed from dance floor bangers to enchanting and spiritual music meant for more than just dancing.

Varhat is a very exciting name in the French scene. He produces minimalist tracks under a few different names, and decides which track goes under which alias depending on what the track “communicates” rather than what it sounds like.

https://soundcloud.com/concreteparis/concrete-finest-varhat-october-8th-2017/

These guys will be joined by one of London’s most up and coming talents Joseph Williams, Berlin-based Cleymoore, and techno pioneer Geddes. We cannot WAIT to see them all.

RPMM 2nd wave

The line up of over 50 local and international artists will be joined by mind-blowing visual artist Jonny TV, who has created epic sets for the likes of Primal Scream and Chemical Brothers, will also be at the festival making sure all your senses experience bliss.

Porto as a place is also a magical event to come for in itself. For collector enthusiasts, there’s a wide selection of record shops, and for those who love a party there’s a vast bar scene and endless clubs/ live music venues. For the travellers amongst you there’s beautiful history, walking, and stunning views. RPMM is made to suit everybody, and one thing’s for sure, you won’t get bored!

So what are you waiting for? Buy your tickets for RPMM now and we’ll see you there!
