Our latest Hidden Treasure is the roaring Dancing Leopard, a fashion brand drawing its inspiration from Indian’s Sari style, Ibiza music culture and the Hippie movement. Lets instil an atmosphere of farniente in our nightclubs and firmly break our (almost) grey horizon with a colourful floating Boho.

hiddentreasures1

The sourcing and production of Dancing Leopard was in a small family factory in Delhi in respect of the Fair Trade Market. The designer stayed there for 6 months to work on the production and came back to London and Ibiza to spread the good look among the trendy population. Bohos, Kimonos and other silky and aerial creations are all made in colourful prints chosen among Delhi Market materials.

Dancing Leopard samples the cultures and hybridizes our fashion by making it completely versatile, colourful and exotic.  You can find Dancing Leopard’s products in underground markets places such as the wicked Sunday Upmarket.

GJ SnowLeopard

Dear Meoko readers!

Dancing Leopard and MEOKO has teamed up to invite you into the bush dance, offering you the possibility to win three pieces to the value of 150 pounds in total! All you have to do is to send us a pic of your craziest leopard outfit to this address hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk. Good luck!

Hidden Treasures: Introducing MILLIONHANDS + Win T-shirts & Vouchers

By Competitions, Festival, Hidden Treasures, Hot Off The Press

hiddentreasures banner

In our ‘Hidden Treasures’ series, MEOKO digs deep to bring you the up-and-coming brands and underground designers behind some of the most unique sartorial creations that are yet to saturate mainstream shops and magazines. Each brand we choose reflects MEOKO’s own ethos: positivity, creativity, innovation, good times and good vibes. Plus we give you the chance to win some treasures of your own!

As our MEOKO soirée a couple of weeks back demonstrated quite nicely, fashion and dance music are undeniably intertwined, whether people would like to admit it or otherwise. Not only are electronic music dancefloors some of the most colourful and interesting sartorial spaces in London, but the artworks of labels such as Perlon, R&S, Innervisions (the list goes on) are forever pushing the aesthetic boundaries of how music is presented, chosen, and popularised. Tom Mangan‘s menswear clothing brand-meets-record label, Millionhands, overtly embodies this connection and the result has been awesome, despite the community’s disdain for similar partnerships between DJs and fashion in the past…

“Streetwear for the musically conscious”

Born on a cold December night in Berlin back in 2008, Millionhands’ simple but bold designs have since become staples amongst those “in the know”, and for very good reason too. Streetwear for the musically conscious, Millionhands‘ clothing adroitly straddle the line between music merchandise and boutique fashion, through quality reproductions of well-known album/label artworks and almost always on a limited edition basis. This means that people who stay on the pulse can acquire T-shirts adorned with their favourite brands and artists, comfortable in the knowledge that thousands of others won’t be wearing it as well. Not only is the concept pretty cool but they’ve managed to team up with some amazing underground brands and unique record labels, creating some highly coveted garms as a consequence!

millionhands3                 millionhands5

We’re not sure how they’ve managed to coordinate such awesome partnerships with the artists/imprints/festivals that they have, but we’re guessing it helps that Millionhands‘ founder Tom Mangan is a producer himself, having released on the likes of Dirtybird, Playtime, Made to Play, and now obviously his own label: Millionhands. From teaming up with interesting designers such as Mo’Wax‘s art director Ben Drury and established labels like Tsuba Records, R&S,  Aus Music, Rekids, to reproducing the aesthetic of a whole of reknowned DJs and producers (Derrick May, Tensnake, Space Dimension Controller, Little Boots, Joe Goddard, Tiger & Woods, and Zombie Disco Squad being just a selection), Millionhands have succesfully marked themselves out as the outfitter of the underground. Extending the brand beyond the line, the team have founded two new record labels that reflect the aesthetic of their designs, with every one being lovingly hand-stamped and numbered and their website they sell unique art prints and analogue equipment alongside their own mix series and blog!

millionhands6                 31915 616655955027744 441884160 n

Here at MEOKO HQ (in our blissful sun-loving state) we are especially coveting their recent collaboration with the NY label Have A Killer Time: a collection of T-shirts printed with Walter Jones’ ‘Utopiano Projects’ EP art on it (pictured below), with the iconic acid smiley face and spring-like William Morris prints combining to make a timeless summer T-shirt – basically we need this right now!

millionhands2                  1053018 670847946275211 1366944298 o

The brand doesn’t seem to be slowing down, however, and we strongly suggest you keep a close eye on them in the next six months. In the pipeline are plans for a store in Shoreditch, a compilation CD, a clubnight and even a collaboration with bike company Pashley. Big tings!

COMPETITION

We’ve teamed up with Millionhands to offer our MEOKO readers a massive prize opportunity, enabling you to get your hands on limited edition, highly-coveted printed tees and vinyl if you wish.

1st prize: 3 x Millionhands T-shirts

Runner-up prizes: 1 x £10 voucher to spend as you wish! (8 to be won)

To enter, simply comment on the social feed below this article stating the label or album artwork YOU would most like to see featured on a T-shirt, PLUS send an email to hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with ‘Millionhands‘ as the subject and your FULL NAME + FACEBOOK NAME included in the message. MEOKO has been digging deep to bring you the best in up and coming brands and designers for the coolest unique creations out there.  tumblr mndinzk2ou1qe36o7o1 500

Our most recent Hidden Treasure quest has taken us underground  in more ways than one. For this next instalment in the series we bring you Done London (www.donelondon.co.uk) underground street wear inspired by the underground.

Whichever tube line you ride to take your ass across London chances are Done London has a creative tee that’s been inspired by it. Whether it’s the Maze-like motif featured on the platform at Warren street station or the tribal esc seat designs you park your posteriors on the Victoria line, all of Done London’s creations are inspired in one way or another by the transport network most Londoners come into contact with on a daily basis – the underground.

tumblr mmr8p0brHS1qe36o7o1 500

The brand came about in 2011 when designer Will Rowley-Conwy started screen printing his own North and Southbound tees . After getting such a positive response, his love for the underground inspired him to continue to look towards it for more t-shirt design inspiration, shortly after Graffiti shop ‘Chrome & Black’ offered to stock them.‘ I didn’t have much time to come up with a name, my mate was saying ‘You need to get this Done’ – that’s where the name came from, I also felt that everything had been done before so it kinda worked like that too’.  So with that Done London was born.

slideshow 02

Done London is run by designer Will and his partner Tom Andrews who joined forces with him this year and with his added support has allowed the brand to grow meaning the duo can design more complex prints now there’s more man power to do the printing. All of their tees are hand screen printed at their studio in South East London and limited to 50 pieces of each design making them extra special and pretty limited edition so if you want one better get in there pronto!

For this next episode of Hidden Treasures, MEOKO has discovered a rarity that was born out of an inspirational response to the bold, colourful aesthetic found on social networking sites. These 3D-esque designs by In Real Life London aka IRL LDN (inrealifelondon.com) are dazzlingly unique, and are destined to adorn dancefloor trendsetters worldwide. Designer, Cornelia Van Rijwijk, is a digital design whizz kid, who decided to embark on her fashion journey after studying in London by putting her design skills to good use. The result is a line of bold and eye-catching prints, which she sees as ‘3D wearable art’.

LEGGINGS2

Van Rijwijk’s creations blur the lines between the digital and the material, the virtual and the tangible. As she says herself: “The internet is IRL LDN’s home, and exists online, it is only through the clothes being worn that the URL/IRL break is made and the brand can be worn on the streets of the world in real life”. If you DO want to catch IRL LDN in real life then you can see them showcase their creations at the ‘pop-up streetwear market’ at our upcoming event, The MEOKO Project on 28th June, where this brand amongst many other club and festival-ready clothing labels will have a stall!

cthrudrs2

IRL LDN is superbly different, with an array of collections that feature statement prints such as magical tridents, multicoloured dice, colourful peacocks and lotus flowers to name just a few. In Real Life London also produce printed T-shirts, embroidered hats and limited edition, handmade pieces. These creations are digitally printed and the fabric hand-sewn in the studio giving them that extra bit of TLC! IRL LDN will be releasing their next collection (SS-2014) at the end of August 2013, which will feature a toned down collection introducing completely new digitally printed fabrics which may even feature some ladies swimwear!

PRIZE TSHIRT

In Real Life LDN has offered up a rather stunning ‘Envy of Hera’ Limited edition tee  (Pictured above) RRP £130. To be in with a chance of getting your hands on it simply email us at hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with ‘Real Life LDN’ in the title. Winner to be announced end of June, Good Luck!

Hidden Treasures: Introducing SPANGLEWEAR

MEOKO has been digging deep to bring you the best in up and coming brands and designers for the coolest unique creations out there. Each brand representing positivity, creativity and a fun and friendly vibe, to tie in with what we stand for here at MEOKO. Over the coming weeks we’ll be presenting some our favourites, as well as some fresh undiscovered talents for you to feast your eyes over.

The sixth instalment of our ‘Hidden Treasures’ series represents another dazzling collection that will without a doubt be making the rounds on this year’s jam-packed festival circuit. Oozing with the outrageous vivacity adopted by pleasure-seekers throughout the UK, Spanglewear is the rather snazzy brand founded and designed by Bonny Tydeman (aka Little Miss Spangle). Aside from their festival-friendly creations, MEOKO love the positivity behind the ethos of the brand: “Spanglewear is about being your super-self, daring to shine, honouring yourself and empowering yourself – and through that sending out a message of joy and celebration. Life is glorious – we should live it that way”.

spangle-meoko-unicorncaravan

Spanglewear is actually one branch of the Spanglebooth tree, so to speak; Spanglebooth being a multifunctional design studio specialising in party clothes and event decor. Last year saw the “spangle clan” venture around the globe spreading their sparkles far and wide; Bulgaria’s Meadows in the Mountains festival to erect hanging art installations in the trees, Croatia to help deck out the beach for Hideout Festival, and Burning Man to create the costumes for a play taking place on a travelling art-car…incredible!

The original idea behind the Spangle collective was to install an interactive photobooth at events and festivals, inviting participants inside the booth to be ‘spangled’. Subsequently, Bonny was given the opportunity thanks to her friends Jack and Ben of Mad Ferret Productions to host the booth at their acclaimed Parklife festival. From there the concept rapidly gathered momentum, leading to larger festival appearances such as Secret Garden Party and the legendary Burning Man. In Bonny’s own words, the Spanglebooth helped to “spread smiles and sparkles throughout many parties”, and it was from the design of fun, outlandish, spangle-ready accessories created for the pop-up booth that the inspiration came to start a more permanent fashion label.

spanglewagon

Since then, Spanglewear has mostly focused on creating a range of uniquely stylish hats, caps, hoods, Russian hats, crowns and jumpers. Using bold colours, wacky fabrics and rich textures, Spanglewear products are usually always laced with faux-fur, gold chains and costume jewels.  Pretty much every single creation is one-of-a-kind, with their designer Bonny trying as much as possible to resist using her designs twice – unless she is really bugged to re-create them! Most recently Bonny has re-focused on producing more bespoke Spanglewear clothing, just in time for the imminent party season, offering customers the opportunity to order their own ‘100% Bespoke Festival Funsuit’, essentially an individually tailored all-in-one bursting with as much eccentricity as required.

spangle-meoko-beadedrussian copy

This upcoming year, once again you can catch the brand at a host of summer events and additionally they will be launching a series of unique printed tees and Spanglewear textiles. In the words of Bonnie: “prepare to be dazzled”!

COMPETITION

If you want to get your hands on some rather spangle-y goods of your own, then MEOKO are offering one lucky winner the chance to win your very own RUSSIAN HAT and MULTICOLOURED CAP worth a total of £130 (pictured below).

MEOKO Presents Hidden Treasures – Introducing Yoghurt Warrior

For the fifth instalment of our ‘Hidden Treasures’ series, we bring you another budding creative brand, a real tasty treat in the form of Yoghurt Warrior. We came across the brand’s eclectic and eye-catching tropical wares at a recent pop-up event held by The Secret Emporium at Box park in Shoreditch. We later discovered that its founder, designer (and DJ) Jimmy Herrtage started up the brand from scratch three years ago, whilst studying at art college with just a £500 loan from his dad. Jimmy decided to merge his love of art and electronic music by designing and manufacturing tees that he would take along for his fellow DJs, whilst gigging at events (as DJ Shark Bait) – and from here the brand has grown organically, attracting the support from the likes of Annie Mac and Foamo.

YW flyer 1    YW flyer 3

In essence, Yoghurt Warrior produce a range of streetwear apparel, including unisex tees, sweatshirts, leggings and hats, which incorporate quirky designs and slogans with aztec and animal inspired prints. Since Jimmy moved to London the brand has grown from strength to strength, as Yoghurt Warrior has increasingly collaborated with a host of underground music brands, such as Troupe, Flux, Real Nice, Gottwood, WAYF and Secret Garden Party, helping to cement the clothing line’s association with youth culture and underground nightlife. Yoghurt Warrior have even produced merchandise for some of the event brands they’ve worked with; they currently stock a Troupe beanie and will soon be releasing a Gottwood Festival 2013 tee. Not only are Yoghurt Warrior’s designs the right amount of casually cheerful and seriously du jour, but MEOKO also has huge respect for the story behind the brand’s growth, from one man’s personal project to gaining recognition in a whole musical scene and culture.

486382 503654169697822 1187070280 n

This year you can find them hosting stalls at Love System Festival in Croatia at the end of May as well as Gottwood Festival, Secret Garden Party and Bestival. Yoghurt Warrior can also be found on the white isle this summer as they are hosting a week in Ibiza for the first week of July with Together Ibiza, Troupe, Flux and WSS.
