Influenced by underground electronic music, he progressed rapidly and found his own way in the industry. He moved to Paris in 2008 to seek new horizons, which included studying electronic culture and sound technology. Hard work and dedication resulted in a residency at the respected Toi Toi Musik in London, alongside head honcho Voigtmann, Nicolas Lutz, Audio Werner and many more. Lamache has a new project in the pipeline, which entails starting a record label with his friend Guillaume Taillieu called DISCOBAR. Keep you eyes out for their first release in September. Deep house is now seen as fairly overseen and misunderstood term in modern electronic music, but David August is one of the current scene’s most integral purveyors of alternative, leftfield dance-floor music. Still in his tender years, the elusive and thoughtful beat-smith credited for his killer releases Peace of Conscience & You’ve Got To Love Me on Diynamic is all about working at his own pace, eschewing trends and pressure for a more subtle, meandering sound, perfectly summarizing his even more subtle and ethereal approach to the dance floor.

Taking time out from his slow-motion trips, David here joins us for the latest installment of the MEOKO Music Through Pictures series, offering his interpretations to ten striking images through the language of music, matching each one with a track that springs to mind and the reasons why. Time then, no doubt, to get even deeper with  this visionary producer and his peripheral view of the world.

recondite2

Already credited for his sincere brand of techno, German producer Recondite plays with the spaces in between notes, often utilizing field recordings into his stiff and upfront productions to give them a certain emotive, ethereal quality. With an album, Hinterland, under his belt on Ghostly International and a handful of releases already accumulated in a matter of years on the likes of Hotflush, Dystopian and L.A’s Acid Test, the lower-Bavarian producer has honed the art of expressive electronic music to a personally fine art. It makes the introverted and thoughtful name a perfect choice for out latest Music Through Pictures feature, where he matches a selection of images with the music. Looking at things in an intricate light, the producer no doubt looks between the lines as he merges art and music for MEOKO below.

alexandra 2

When Alexandra started working in the electronic music industry, she had no intention to become a DJ. Her passion and curiosity for good underground music got her a proper writing job for ClubbingMag, the first Romanian electronic music magazine. She deliberately found out there was much more than journalism and therefore joined the Sunrise Booking Agency and a:rpia:r label to promote some of the most talented Romanian artists. She became an intrinsic part of the Sunrise collective and started to work the decks herself in 2009. Much has changed since, her first gigs abroad took her straight to some of Europe’s most esteemed clubs like Club der Visionaere, Robert Johnson, Panorama Bar and Arma17, in which she played alongside big names such as Ricardo Villalobos, Zip, Rhaddo, Cassy, Valentino Kanzyani and Thomas Melchior. Alexandra is a vinyl purist who draws her inspiration from a wide variety of styles and artists, resulting in an own and unique style of DJing. This summer she plays at Sunwaves Festival where she will celebrate Romania’s rich musical heritage, “Such a joy we have this festival”. Here she throws her heart and soul into our Music Through Pictures series, offering her interpretations to ten striking images through the language of music, matching each one with a track that spring to mind and the reason why.

The Croatia Collection: MEOKO’s Festival Picks

By Festival, Hot Off The Press, Music Through Pictures, News

croatia collection- festival picksCroatia is at a fascinating stage in its touristic development, absolutely exploding with summer festivals and becoming a must-do destination for the clubbing die-hard and casual holidaymakers alike. With new festivals added every year, it can get a bit overwhelming figuring out which one to go for in the time that you have. MEOKO has put together a guide for you, with our top ten festival picks and a bit of information about each.

Who knows how sustainable these incredible Croatian festival seasons are, so we recommend pouncing on the scene while it’s still fresh, authentic and affordable.

In order of appearance…

1.     For Festival (19th -22nd June)

for fest

The season begins with the smallest, most intimate festival of our list – FOR Festival. The limited capacity (2500) creates a great sense of community and the location is also unique  – FOR takes places on the little island of Hvar off the Croatian coast. The line-up is anything but small however, featuring excellent quality artists on the island every day.

Line-up highlights include Darkside, Mark Ronson DJ Set, Erol Alkan, Tensnake, Maurice Fulton, Ghost Culture and Psychemagik.

Every evening live performances take place at the Venereda (a converted monastery) afterwhich point punters are taken by boat to carpe diem beach, the destination for the night parties. A pretty magical festival experience all round.

Site: Hvar

Nearest Airport: Split

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

2.     Hideout (30th June – 3rd July)

hideout crowd

Another early bird is Hideout Festival, currently enjoying its fourth sellout year and residing in the popular site of Zrce Beach. Hideout’s biggest draw card is the monster line-up, having secured an impressive roster of high profile and hot property names in the house and techno spheres, with clear Ibiza influences.

Line-up highlights include Ame, Disclosure, Maceo Plex, Jamie Jones, Loco Dice, Tale of Us, Solomun, Sasha, Soulclap and Kerri Chandler.

Accommodation in surrounding areas is plentiful and the boat party schedule, though not yet released for 2014, is tipped to be the biggest of the year. The beach location is the perfect holiday setting for this dance-focused event

Site: Zrce Beach

Nearest Airport: Zadar

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

3.  The Garden Festival (2nd – 9th July)

garden fest copy

Photography: Kris Cowley

The Garden Festival is one of the comparatively older festivals on the fresh Croatian scene, having run since 2006. Its stages offer a nice variety of atmospheres, as they host the mainstage in the open parkland area, a beach stage right at the edge of the water looking out to the small neighbouring islands, intimate side stages and chillout areas, boat parties plus a rave-worthy after-hours outdoor discotheque.

Line-up highlights include Bicep, Eats Everything, Francois K, PBR Streetgang, Prosumer and Soul Clap.

Garden offer a package deal with Electric Elephant, so you can enjoy both festivals back to back (if you can hack it!). There is limited and coveted on site apartment accommodation plus the usual luxury camping options and novel podpads.

Site: The Garden Tisno

Nearest airport: Zadar

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

4.     Electric Elephant (10th – 14th July)

EElephant

Whether you’re riding the wave from The Garden Festival or fresh off the boat, Electric Elephant will go down a treat. Elephant really makes the most of its idyllic location, set in a dramatic natural amphitheatre overlooking a secluded sandy bay. The festival promotes an all-round holiday experience, making your time at Electric Elephant as much about enjoying your beautiful surroundings as it is about the high quality music.

Line-up highlights include Derrick May, Francois K, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Horse Meat Disco, FCL and Prosumer.

Electric Elephant also offers some on-site apartment accommodation in addition to camping options and pod pads, and tickets can be purchased alone or in conjunction with The Garden Festival, if you fancy tackling the double (who wouldn’t?).

Site: The Garden Tisno

Nearest airport: Zadar

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

5.     Soundwave (17th – 21st of July)

soundwave

Soundwave is smaller scale than some of the other festivals on this list, but its boutique atmosphere is part of its charm. Right in the middle of summer at the lush Garden Tisno site, the festival spills across garden, beach and ocean – giving you the best of what Croatia has to offer as a holiday destination.

Line-up highlights include Fat Freddy’s Drop, Madlib, Mr Scruff and Gold Panda.

Soundwave offer a Sunshine Bus service, an eco-friendly way to get through your transfers and see something of the area you’ve arrived in. Community spirit is excellent at Soundwave, giving you the opportunity to get to know like-minded people in the relaxing idyllic location.

Site: The Garden Tisno

Nearest Airport: Zadar

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

6.     Stop Making Sense (31st July – 3rd August)

sms

We’re back at The Garden Tisno for SMS, which is trying out this popular site for the first time in 2014, having spent its years at Petrcane thus far. The main site is a festive affair during the day, with the parties continuing after 12 at the nearby Barbella tent – the official after-hours venue for all Tisno festivals. Musical policy is carefully chosen acts from the underground, with a distinct London influence

Line-up highlights include Anja Schneider, Mosca, Physchemagik, Tiger & Woods and Optimo.

Site: The Garden Tisno

Nearest airport: Zadar

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

7.     Sonus (18th -22nd August)

sonus copy

Our pick of the bunch – and official partners of MEOKO – Sonus Festival has the line-up to end all line-ups for the dance music heads, the classic beach location, the essential boat party schedule and a huge following already of loyal or anticipatory fans. The increasingly popular tourist destination Zrce beach provides the idyllic adriatique location, making it one of the more easily accessible festivals on the list.

Line-up highlights include Marco Carola, Dixon, Loco Dice, Jamie Jones, Luciano, Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Seth Troxler and Marcel Dettman.

Check out our MEOKO competition to win two tickets to the festival, two tickets to a boat party plus accommodation for the entire stretch!

Site: Zrce beach

Nearest airport: Zadar

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

8.     Dimensions (28th -31st of August)

Moat copy

One of the later festivals of the season, it’s also one of the most interesting. A carefully curated line-up which especially satisfies the more knowledgeable and alternative music lovers, encompassing the deeper end of the underground whilst including the funky, the percussive and the experimental.

Line-up highlights include Moodymann, John Hopkins, Juan Atkins, Gilles Peterson, Nina Kraviz and Floating Points.

The location is a unique and class act in itself, taking over the Fort Punta Christo and featuring the infamous Moat stage (pictured). Dimensions also run a live gig the evening before the festival kicks off, set in an ancient amphitheatre and this year featuring Caribou and Darkside live.

Site: Fort Punta Christo

Nearest airport: Pula

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

Check out a glowing MEOKO review of Dimensions 2013 here.

9.     Outlook (3rd – 7th September)

outlook 2011

This is another of the older vintage of Croatian festivals, going into its seventh year of production. The line-up focuses on sound system driven bass music, angling towards drum n bass, breakbeats, dub, reggae and hip hop styles.

Line-up highlights include the one and only Ms Lauryn Hill, Busta Rhymes, DBridge, Calibre, Horace Andy, Goldie and Friction.

OUtlook also resides in Fort Punta Christo and the location really is unparalleled, transforming an old fortress by the beach into a fully rigged party destination with the most inventive stage areas of any of the Croatia venues. They’ve put stages in gardens, a moat, a ruinous circular pit, on the beach, on boats and in a dungeon!

Site: Fort Punta Christo

Nearest airport: Pula

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

10.  Unknown (8th – 12th September)

unknown

Unknown has secured top DJs on the electronica circuit and added a healthy live component to their offering, with live shows from Henrik Schwarz, James Holden, Ten Walls, Wild Beasts, Forest Swords and Mount Kimbie. Their chosen artists will bring a very atmospheric, melodic and explorative aspect to the Festival’s sountrack.

DJ line-up highlights include Ame, Dixon, Dusky, Erol Alkan, George Fitzgerald, Joy Orbison, Seth Troxler and Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs.

Unknown bunks down at the coastal Camp Amarin, right near the picturesque old town of Rovinj. It’s a fantastic location for activities, with its own swimming pools, crazy golf, tennis courts and infalteables. Camping sites have a little more shade than most, and the local town is a short bus ride away.

Site: Camp Amarin

Nearest Airport: Pula

Full line-up, info and tickets here.

The infamous Parisian trio made up of Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky share the same musical roots, tastes and creative visions. Apollonia was an organically, if not inevitable progression for the trio. Serving as a platform for their productions and a natural fit for their music. The guys did a Music Trough Pictures with MEOKO last year (read back here). Nearly a year later, Apollonia made huge steps forward and gave us a reason to get back in touch with them. They will re-release Kerri Chandler’sSunday Sunlight” this week. This reissue comes with a newly commissioned remix from Delano Smith. Music Through Pictures with Dennis Ferrer

DennisFerrer 0099-Edit-3-Edit

The US’s calibre of ‘classic’ DJs is often a wide, varied and celebrated vintage, the North American continent having been responsible for some of house music’s most enduring and recognisable names. Visionary producer, Objektivity label head and all-round New York hero Dennis Ferrer is one of the names that constantly spring to mind. Having carved his influence in both the house and techno scenes in the 90s with close support from legends in the game like Kerri Chandler, Ferrer has now earned the ‘legendary’ status in his own right. A champion of House music in all its forms, his releases have consistently been catalysts for change.

Here, Mr Ferrer throws his heart and soul into Music Through Pictures, offering his interpretations to ten striking images through the language of music, matching each one with a track that springs to mind and the reasons why. A true ‘House Master’ gets deep as music and art collide….

pleasurekraft whiteburn2

Pleasurekraft is Kalle Ronngardh and Kaveh Soroush’s immaculately conceived baby (their words) – the resulting music releases making them easily the second most influential immaculate conception of all time. With Kaveh from Washington DC and Kalle hailing from Sweden, the two form an international duo with a simple mission to get you dancing to their unusual groove. Their label Kraftek is churning out quality techno by the ice-bucket-load, with a remixes EP just out, a remix of Booka Shade’s ‘Crossing Borders’ round the corner and a new album pencilled in for an Autumn release. Their responses to our pictures have turned up some excellent tunes from their vast musical knowledge that we may never have otherwise heard…

1.

1-Dummer

Pretty much all intense pictures of people drumming remind me of Danny Carey of Tool – this picture specifically reminded me of his drum work during the bridge section of “Jimmy” off one of my favorite albums of all time “AEnima” (picked by Kaveh)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uc9r1uf5ms

2.

2-fabric

Calculated and mathematical – this Escher piece just lends itself so naturally to the work of Philip Glass. Despite the use of optical illusion it has a certain melancholy to it as though all the paths and stairs all lead to nowhere but right back into the maze again. Kind of Kafka-esque and made me think of “Temple of the Golden Pavilion” with its somber undertone beneath the beautiful melodies that glide above it. (picked by Kaveh)

3.

3-holding-hands-on-car

This is for me a love song, and one of my favorite songs of all time. Me and a friend listened and danced to this track at least 20 times in a row at an afterparty. I never grow tired of it. (picked by Kalle)

4.

4-Lighting

This song just explodes in to euphoria. Multiple times. (picked by Kalle)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOKUCKBcuWs&feature=share

6-Glass ceiling

One of my favorite vocalists – something about this cover of the famous Cucurrucucu just reflects the harmony in great architecture natural or man made.  This specific version is the orchestral one used in Wong Kar Wai’s “Happy Together” as opposed to the more famous guitar based one. (picked by Kaveh)

7-Dark way

A Swedish folk/electronica duo who perfectly captures the mood I’m getting from this. (picked by Kalle)

10-Lakemountains

Can you believe this guy was only 16 back when he made this track? (picked by Kalle)

9-Moon

Eerie and otherworldly – the singular Jocelyn Pook is such a genius in my opinion.  She was the composer behind the infamous mansion initiation/orgy scene in Kubrick’s “Eyes Wide Shut” – and to me this picture of the bleak moonscape reminded me of “Butterfly Song”. (picked by Kaveh)
