By Competitions, Festival, Hot Off The Press

home london

Home-London one of the city’s leading underground music brands will host a very special event on Sunday May 26th that extends from the  early afternoon hours till the morning after at the well-known Studio 338 . This night will be one to remember as Home-London included stellar and familiar djs in the minimal house scene like  Raresh and Praslea (which will perform together as Praslesh), Cap, Lizz, Charlie , Vlada, Dj Masda, and  Dragos Ilici, alongside  emerging acts like E/tape, Timoti, and Pol valls to curate the music selection of this mystical rhythmic and melodic gathering. To top the evening, the visuals will be handled by Pareidolia a visual jockey that has been in constant motion and action alongside the Romanian selectors with a chic-glitch minimal aesthetic of mesmerizing and experimental imagery.  Expect nothing but excellent music all around and experience a Sunday to remember on any of the three rooms of Studio 338.

home-london

It’s no surprise Raresh and Praslea will headline this special evening , the duo has proven that their musical affinity and friendship creates a special synergy when playing as Praslesh, having performed together mind bending and jaw dropping sets all over the world including cities like New York, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and Paris among others to their list. Every time they go on stage whether individually or collectively as their joined project these Romanian selectors seduce audiences and dance floors with their passion, charisma and taste for unique music in a dreamlike fashion. Be sure to blink once in a while because you might forget you are living a fleeting moment of bliss.

Cap, Lizz and Charlie are some of the newer names from the romanian minimal cast that have also proven to be names to watch in the future as both djs and producers. Cap is one to mix and combine with great versatility blending shades of electro, broken beats and techno to old school house adapting to any dance floor with keen sensitive tact .Lizz is one of those names that has been on the rise due to his ability to produce deep groovy and spacey sounds that take the listener on an ecstatic journey.. Charlie  as well, has gained much deserved notoriety recently within the underground minimal scene, having performed intricate and delightful sets at the infamous Sunwaves Festival in Romania among other local and international stages.

Vlada is a well-known leading female figure in the minimal scene as she has delighted crowds with her sophisticated selection and dazing sounds at Sunwaves Festival among other prestigious venues and places in Europe and North America. These feats have lead to successfully establishing herself alongside other renowned names of the scene. DJ Masda, Japanese born and Berlin based dj will also add his particular style of minimal selection with shades of acid, deep house and technoid sounds to the bill.. Dragos llici will also take part of this multi ethnic and well curated line up, adding his own signature groove and rolling bass lines that keep people`s feet moving in a mysterious trance.

vlada

E/tape, Timoti and Pol Valls will provide support to this massive line up with their unique vision of music respectively. These acts are sure ones to watch out in the near future as they have gained support in the local circuit and abroad lately due to quality warm up sets and skilled mixing.

In short, this will be a night for the books filled with the finest curation of music and visuals, so bring your dancing shoes and a positive attitude. Do not forget the marathon will last around the seventeen hour mark, so make sure to keep hydrated and fed and prepare for a long and exciting day of dancing and unforgettable feelings and memories. For their first instalment of 2019, London-based crew Grounded have set the bar high, curating a lineup of exceptional calibre for a unique warehouse experience. Since their debut in August last year, Grounded crew have been inconspicuously establishing themselvesthrough a series of parties bringing a slice of Romania to London.

cover-event

On Saturday the 2ndof February, Grounded will welcome some of the scenes finest rising and established talents for a night set to satisfy the sonic palates of those keen to have their boundaries pushed. Romanian heavyweights Dan Andrei [a:rpia:r]andAndrei Ciubuc [Cuplet, MIORITMIC], will be joined by Spanish Baltazar [Shamandrum] alongside Drums mainstays: Elia Nafzger and Desuba. This curation strikes the ideal balance of diversity and cohesion, each selector bringing a unique take on the minimal sound and a healthy dose of both the familiar and unfamiliar.

Of course, a schedule this impressive demands a high level of care and attention towards event design and production. Naturally, Grounded have delivered. Equipping the warehouse space with a crisp Funktion One system, the subtle nuances of the music will shine, enabling the immersive listening experience prescribed by the Romanian sound. The musical journey will be complemented by the visuals of Constantin Malmare. In addition to his hypnotic contribution to previous Grounded outings, Constantin’s design work for Anthea’s Partisan is testament to his ability to visually communicate the intricacies of music. It goes without saying that this event is set to be a truly mesmerising affair. In Grounded’s own words, it will be an event“where words leave off and music begins”; a night of magic not to be missed.

Preview & Competition: Kinder Garden x Slow Life : RMMT Bday

By Competitions, Event Previews and Reviews, Hot Off The Press, MEOKO Exclusive

paris feature Jun2018

It’s hard to be a dance music globe-trotter sometimes. Ask any touring DJs and they’ll tell you about the exhaustion that comes with the lifestyle. Same for us at MEOKO: Romania, Prague, Barcelona… There’s always a good party going on somewhere outside of our homebase of London, and when we spot one, we’ve got to be there. This is worth all the comedowns in the world, after all, and so this time we’re setting sails to Paris, for the “Kinder Garden X Slow Life” on June 22.

Kinder Garden is a fairly new Parisian venture thrown by the collective RMMT, always focusing on a specific crew while showcasing younger members of the French capital’s scene in a second room. After Traffic or Libertine, they’re receiving Slow Life on June 22nd — and celebrating RMMT’s 1st birthday by the same occasion. If you’re French yourself, and probably even if you ain’t, you know that the local scene for all things minimal is at the top of its game lately. RMMT is one of the crews giving it a new youth, so this party in their 13th arrondissement basement is not one to miss, especially with such guests of honor.

Slow Life is a motor in this part of the minimal scene that’s been focusing on excavating forgotten gems from the vaults of dance music past, seeing treasures in what others would have dismissed as mere dusty wax. This makes it hard to pinpoint their sound: it’s more about vibe than genre, electronic music with a dare-to-be-weird attitude that never sounds forced, yet genuinely oblique and out there — organically grown by dedicated crate diggers.

It’s a six-person collective based in Berlin but with roots in Spain and Italy, one where friendship is at the base of the working relation. The four DJs though, all playing at the Kinder Garden, are Laurine, Cecilio, DJ Tree and S. Moreira, the latter of which might sound the most familiar as he produces as well and was behind all the early productions on the label — which says a lot as they largely contributed to put Slow Life’s name on the avid music seekers’ lips outside of their home base of Berlin.

If you need any introduction to the label, one that would perfectly summarize their ever-curious free-wheeling attitude, look no further than their 2016 compilation “Chromophore”. Here, you’ll find along Moreira likeminded young sprouts like Uruguay’s Luis Malon and Saverio Celestri, facing off with veterans Seafoam, A², and Mick Welch.

Besides this kind of dreamy breaks-leaning deep house that Moreira specializes in, another familiar face since the beginning is fellow Berlin Italian transplant Saverio Celestri. The label’s close friend has released his only LP so far on Slow Life, in his trademark electro-influenced style, full of rattling bass and out-of-control snares.

Lately the label’s been on a fantastic streak. Keeping it in the family, Moreira has collaborated with the in-house designer Santi Uribe for an album of ambient outerspace excursions surely inspired by the kind of experimentations techno and trance producers would often try their hand to in the 90s — the sort of stuff Slow Life must have encountered a countless amount of time in their digging journeys. And it’s no wonder that their most recent releases featured 100hz, Marco Repetto or Tim Jackiw — all more-or-less forgotten producers returning to the spotlight in the past years thanks to digging culture. They’ve also opened the label to other younger artists sharing their vibe, with Swedish newcomer Basement Space taking the UK route and Berlin duo Primary Perception going deeper than deep on their debut LP and stellar “Retrofitted Future Vol. 1” EP — perhaps my favourite record on the label.

But it’s really behind the decks however that the Slow Life ethos can be experienced. Anyone attending their regular label nights at Club Der Visionaere or Hoppetosse cannot fail to see the enthusiasm of the crew’s DJs, like a bunch of friends excited about sharing their discoveries to one another — a spirit summarized in the title of Slow Life’s second release, courtesy of Moreira: “We All Are Fra!”

With the whole crew invited, this Paris bash is one for the books. To celebrate the occasion, we’re holding a competition, the winner of which will get a

– 1×2 entry and

– Slow Life’s most recent release, Basement Space’s “Cosmic Collision”.

You know the drill, just email us at hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with “Kinder Garden” as the subject heading. And if you don’t feel so lucky, book your tickets here. Happy birthday RMMT!

Preview & Competition: Eagervision presents Cap, Javier Carballo & More

Are you going to Sunwaves? If not… my heart aches for you. If yes, then you know you’ll be tapping your arms for some more of that oh-so-sweet loopy minimal Romanian vibe in the weeks following the festival. Thank god if you live in London, Eagervision’s got your back and is ready to pull you out of the withdrawal-induced bleakness by throwing a party loaded with rolling beats and sunny vibes at Bloc. on May 11th.

Indeed, the headliners are two Sunwaves regulars, and both will be hot on the heels of this year’s 23rd edition. There’s little need to introduce Cap, one of the most revered names amongst the cohort of Romanian DJs that the country gave us in the past decade. But despite the fact his style displays all the hallmarks we love about the Romanian sound — trippy, hypnotic melodies, impeccable mixes, driving beats — Cap is one of the genre’s few DJs able to pepper his sets with tunes encompassing a much wider spectrum, from house to electro. This versatility was manifest in his MEOKO podcast:

Cap MC

Javier Carballo, on the other hand, rings perhaps less of a bell than his Romanian counterpart, yet there’s a reason he’s a regular at Sunwaves: as a DJ, his style perfectly encapsulates the festival’s ethos. Javier specializes in hypnotizing, sun-drenched beats, which is a combination we’re always thirsty for. He might fly a bit under the radar to some, but Eagervision knows better and we’re delighted they bring him back on British soil with this booking.

Completing the line-up are a few of Eagervision’s protégés, all of them having or about to drop EPs on the label. Alffie, Alwaan and Fernando Montes are sure to make you move.

The best of it all — as if a Romanian party in London was not enough — is that we’re holding a competition for this event, a competition that has not one but two winners. The first prize includes

– A 2-hour DJ lesson (whether you already pride yourself with your skills or are a complete newbie, know that the lesson can be for beginner or advanced),

– Javier Carballo’s recent double EP on Hector’s label Vatos Locos Silver Smile, so you’ll have something to spin for those lessons,

– And of course two entries and some Eagervision goodies, (which the other winner will also get, two entries and some Eagervision goodies.)

As usual, all you have to do to participate is email us at hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with the subject heading ’Eagervisions’. Good luck!

Join us on May 11 to fight the post-Sunwaves blues, and book your tickets already.

Preview & Competition: E1 Presents: Body & SOUL

By Competitions, Event Previews and Reviews, Hot Off The Press, MEOKO Exclusive, MEOKO Presents

bodysoulmeokobanner

The turn of the century is often remembered as a dark age for New York dance music. With then-mayor Rudy Giuliani cracking up on parties, using for instance the infamous and racist no-dancing law that only just got repealed, dance music lovers were forced more and more underground. Yet from 1996 to 2002, a cult Sunday afternoon party drew week-in week-out those that no amount of policing could prevent from dancing: starting off as a mere outlet for François K and his friends’ frustration with the state of New York’s nightlife, Body & Soul made a lasting impact on the city’s scene. And now E1 London is bringing the full crew to London for a rare Body & Soul appearance this Saturday.

Body & Soul got started in July 1996 as a weekly Sunday afternoon affair by three long-time alumni of the NYC dance scene, and soon acquired a cult status among its crowd of devotees — it is now remembered with the same fondness as the very parties and clubs that had inspired it in the first place. Indeed, François K, Joe Claussel and Danny Krivit — the three masterminds behind the party — all cut their teeth behind the decks of the Big Apple’s most iconic clubs, where they’ve put in a ludicrous amount of time as dancers themselves. The Loft, the Paradise Garage, you name it: here is the DNA running in Body & Soul’s blood. In other words, few people live and breathe dance music as much as those three. A list of their individual accomplishments would be unreasonably lengthy, but suffice to say that Joe Claussel is one of the founders of cult house label Ibadan, while François K is simply one of the most influential producers ever: from pretty much single-handedly pioneering the art of the dance music edit in the late ’70s to collaborating with Mick Jagger and Depeche Mode, the native Frenchman has forever imprinted his mark on the musical landscape.

And as for Danny Krivit, in addition to being one of his city’s most famous DJs, he’s given us what for my money might be the best edit ever: if you want one tune that embodies the ethos of Body & Soul, look no further than his version of “Love Is The Message”.

To celebrate this unique occasion to catch the legendary trio in London, MEOKO is putting on a special competition. In addition to two entries for Saturday’s party at E1, the lucky winner will get £30 worth of free drinks and a copy of the first 3×12” compilation put out by Body & Soul (https://www.discogs.com/sell/release/62214?ev=rb), which includes a bunch of the party’s most rinsed tunes, and bona fide New York garage classics.

All you have to do to participate is email us at hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with ‘Body&Soul’ as the subject heading. Good luck!.

To leave him the last word, here’s what François K had to say about Body & Soul at its height: “these parties we’re having right now are among the very few I go to where the crowd goes nuts… They’re screaming and hollering, singing and stomping, they don’t want to leave the club. Every week now, it’s become this habit, where we put the lights on and everybody keeps dancing. We turn the music off and they sing, so we have to put more music on.” So if you like your house music soulful, try your chance at the competition and come over at E1 this Saturday. This is one for the books.

Preview: The Sunday Afters ‘NYD’ w/ Vinyl Speed Adjust & Competition

By Competitions, Event Previews and Reviews, Hot Off The Press, Interview & Exclusive Mix, MEOKO Exclusive

nyd krpt banner

Hello little pumpkins, and happy new… not yet, not yet! But it’s coming soon and there’s an avalanche of parties to ease in 2018. The one you’ll be more likely to see me at is The Sunday Afters — which will happen on a, well, Monday. That shouldn’t stop your favourite Sunday afterparty to absolutely smash it though. A rallying cry for all of the city’s party freaks, minimal lovers, jaw-munchers and quite simply anyone desperate for an afterparty in the wee hours of the morning, the East London institution will be fresh off its 5th birthday and seems to be determined to start off the year with a boom. And let’s be honest, they came up with a line-up that puts most clubs to shame, assembling the finest team of minimal traffickers.

First up there are Vinyl Speed Adjust, with a 4-hour set that will let them deploy the full extent of their hypnotic magic. The Romanian duo have a massively broad scope, and it’d be impossible to single out a favourite tune. But rest assured that the one constant feature is their Romanian seal of quality. That’s why they’ve been longtime favorite of ours at MEOKO, and you can check the interview we did with them in 2015 — or better yet, “let the music do the talking” as they like to say, and listen to the two mighty mixes they did for us.

That said, it’s not like the Sunday Afters put all their eggs in the same basket with their headliners; the supporting acts are serious competition. Take Alex Celler. London’s Greek minimalist’s reputation is already very established, and with recent releases on Trelik and PAL SL, it’s fair to say he’s become a bit of a Baby Ford favourite — earlier this year, he even played for the label’s showcase supporting no less than the bossman himself and Zip. Such backing from one of electronic music’s all-time best is not granted to everyone, but it’s definitely deserved in Alex’s case.

AlexCeller MC

On the other hand, there’s Frazer Campbell, another London stalwart. His take on techno is twisted and driving — the kind that will lock you in a languid groove perfect for the hazy hours. Since 2016 he’s had a very productive time with the beginnings of his two labels, Open Recordings and Elliot Project Records, and for me his recent EP with Steve O’Sullivan on the latter’s Mosaic imprint is clearly one of this year’s best. No doubt 2018 will be his year, and I’m genuinely stoked at the idea to start it in his company.

Based between Tel Aviv and Berlin, we haven’t heard much of Stan Yaroslavlky yet, since The Sunday Afters are bringing him over for his first ever UK gig. But if his newly-minted Small Things Records label is to be trusted, the man knows a thing or two about making your feet move. The first release is full of those clicks and bleeps that make sane persons ask you “is this even music?”, when this is precisely the reason we love it so much — odd sounds for odd people ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Obviously, this wouldn’t be a Sunday Afters without their own crew, and resident Geometric will play B2B with another regular from the party Modebakù. We might be drawn in by the big-hitters, but it’s guys like them that have made the Sunday Afters what it is. In addition, we’re promised some special guests from the Arupa Music camp. Keep your eyes peeled!

Aaaand we are here to the sweetest bit of all this, the giveaway time. So we have teamed with Sunday Afters to give away 2 vinyls, PTX019 & NGT09 and 2 guestlist spots for the NYD madness. All you have to do is email us at hello_competitions@devmeoko.co.uk with ‘NYD w VSA’ as the subject heading & click attending on the facebook event. Good luck!.

Well that’s it — and that sounds, to me at least, absolutely amazing! Any East London weekend warrior worthy of the name has already spent a Sunday morning in the safe hands of the Sunday Afters’ team, and they should be out in force on this New Year’s Day. This will go down at a secret location, and we’re told it’s a new warehouse. But is there anything more to say, really? If you know, you know. So grab your tickets and see you there!

We are just weeks away from celebrating Forever And A Day‘s second anniversary. Time and time again the London based brand have provided unique and wild parties always selecting handfuls of high quality artists to represent there sound. The day time party on Saturday the 25th of November will be no exception, preparing a magical experience for everyone involved before taking on another trip around the sun. Where is the party taking place you ask? STYX, London, kicking off at Midday.

Amphia, Understand, and Ourown are just a few of the eclectic outlets we can relate to Romanian headliner, Cezar. The journey man. Holds the ability to control the atmosphere and the crowd as if they are on strings. Slick minimal cuts, sometimes bordering on house, extracted from a variety of years. Witnessing him in action is one of those times you will never forget, embedded with the moment.

Dreamy landscapes, laced with dub grooves will be the flavour of the day when Frenchman Varhat tells his anniversary story. The last few years has seen the Yoyaku artist constantly build on his personal reputation, and the labels. His productions are widely appreciated across the board, played at parties all over the world. It will be interesting to absorb the up close and personal experience, and what he will have in the bag for the Forever And A Day family.

Another Romanian artist on board is, Gri (Mulen/Tzinah Records). Someone who has obviously made a lasting impression with the brand as he is called back to play for them again. Kofi Tyson & Oana Leca (Auroom) will be playing a special b2b set. As they welcome new faces for the party, some familiar faces will also be making an appearance Azire, Syreeta, and Shane B b2b WD Wallace.
