The Hydra has become one of London’s finest underground dance music institutions since they have been throwing parties for more than ten years. They have managed to showcase some of the best line ups at one of the best venues in the capital: Studio Spaces. This weekend they come up with yet another mouthwatering line up, teaming up with london based record label and party, Electric Minds and Cologne’s infamous Kompakt.
LINE UP
Moodymann, owner of his KDJ imprint, needs no introduction. A musician, producer and DJ, he manages to deliver banging sets with so much passion, talent and personality, that youtube now has a collection of Kenny Dixon Jr. in the spotlight, including his viral interviews (see Moodymann on his MPCs from a RBMA talk here). He has continuously wowed crowds with his outgoing personality, in the TV room and on the dance floor. All eyes and ears are drawn to him even behind that mask of his, while he busts some fantastic one liners, while spinning amazing records. Be absolutely blown away by Moodymann as he plays music from uplifting funk, disco, soul and sexy jazz to experimental electronic music to acid techno while mixing with only a pair of white Apple headphones.
Joey Anderson is definitely one to watch, as his deep, atmospheric, cosmic productions take you on a trip to that other dimension. Part of the Exchange Place crew and releasing tracks on Ygrec, Joey sits alongside fellow US house veteran DJ QU. Originally from New Jersey, he made his first connections with dance music on the other side of the DJ console as a dancer. As his attraction to dance music grew, so did his involvement as he started collecting records and eventually started churning out fantastic productions on renowned labels such as Syncrophone, his own imprint, Inimeg, Fred P’s Soul People Music and recently Amsterdam’s Dekmantel. Steadily but surely, Joey Anderson has grown to create a unique style of his own. His talent and style has no doubt pushed him to become an international DJ, where his dark and raw sets take the dance floor on a cosmic trip. His time is now.
The co-founder of Kompakt himself will be representing this institution of a label for this partnership of a party. Without Mayer, Kompakt would not have taken off to become not only one of dance music’s most influential record stores and labels, but distributor, recording studios and booking agency too. Kompakt is renowned for blending minimal techno music with pop, an achievement thought outrageous even today. Michael managed to help create something so novel to the otherwise dark sounds of the underground, and has been celebrated for this innovative achievement.
When he is not busy showcasing his A&R skills as he pinpoints new talent for Kompakt, Michael Mayer can be seen playing gigs all around the globe.
Joining Kompakt co-owner is fellow label member, Robag Wruhme. In MEOKO’s interview with the German producer and DJ early last year, we mentioned how he was in “a moment of flux in his career”, and he certainly hasn’t taken any breaks since then. From that time during the interview, he has managed to release music on the most well-respected labels such as R&S Records, Ibadan Records, Monkeytown, and of course, Kompakt.
The other half of Pachanga boys, Rebolledo will be joining the other two Kompakt players for this event. His involvement with the label started just this year when he released his experimental, electro and Kompakt driven Momento Drive. He has also been a defining member in Matias Aguayo’s Cómeme label. Expect some latin grooves mixed with his electronic, tech house sets from this Mexican cruiser.
Sei A aka Andy Graham is another eclectic DJ to add to this experimental yet dance floor friendly line up. A favourite of Tiga, after his debut album Editing Shadows released on Missive Music, he released another album this time on Tiga’s Turbo, titled White Raindbows. Since then he continues his partnership with a collection of EPs and tracks for the Canadian imprint. Expect UK bass heavy late night grooves from this Glaswegian turned Londoner artist.
Leon Vynehall's Music For The Uninvited EP, released on 3024, has been displayed on record store walls and windows since it was released early this year. He has also released tracks, just as Sei A has, on Aus Music. His productions and sets clearly show his influences of Hip Hop, and his sets, most surprisingly, bear hints of classic disco too. Another artist who is clearly not afraid to break boundaries.
Dolan Bergin is a natural promoter, and has been throwing amazing parties as part of London’s Electric Minds, which has evolved into a label too, showasing talent such as The Mole, Radio Slave and Dolan Bergin himself. Dolan pulls in talent from all over the world & from different labels and manages to create one holistic party. His Electric Minds has certainly grown into a well-renowned party, as the party itself goes on tour to Europe’s finest underground venues: Amsterdam’s Trouw and Frankfurt’s Robert Johnson. It makes sense therefore that he will be joining the line up of this Electric Minds meets Kompakt event.
Two influental A&R talents; Dolan Bergin and Michael Mayer, a family of members from the Kompakt institution, Aus Music talents, future classic producer and DJ; Joey Anderson and Detroit legend, Moodymann come together from different walks of life to deliver an eclectic night of talent at London’s Studio Spaces.
